Teacher presence ... easy to see, hard to teach. We have all seen a teacher that can walk into any classroom, walk to the front of the room, face the class, and the class settles down, without the teacher saying a word.
So what is it? It is an inside job. It is knowing who you are as a teacher, and knowing your value.
How do you get it? Know your expectations- What EXACTLY do you expect of your students? Students need to be taught what you want. Telling 32 students to come to class prepared, means 32 different things to them. You need to show them what YOU mean by being prepared.
Know your value-Second only to parents, teachers have the most impact on a child's life. That means that what you are doing is really important. Students may not always show how much they value you, but they do. If you don't believe me, I challenge you to ask everyone at your next gathering, maybe Thanksgiving?, "Tell me about a teacher that left an impression on you, good or bad." Everyone has a story that begins ...there once was this teacher. That teacher, had presence.
